A little colour can make an everyday outfit feel entirely different.

Let me describe a morning you might recognise.

You're heading out for coffee in your favourite jeans. Now for the top.

The first is a blouse that looks lovely but feels stiff. The second is soft, but a little shapeless in the mirror. The third is pretty, until the sleeves tug when you reach for your bag.

So you pull out the same plain tee. Again.

I'm Olivia, and moments like that are why I'm so particular about the tops I choose for Daily Aussie. It shouldn't be this hard to find a top that feels good and looks nice.

You don't need a makeover. You'd just like something comfortable, with a bit of colour, that goes with the jeans you already own.

You shouldn't have to choose between feeling comfortable and feeling nicely dressed.

Small details make the difference, and there are six I always look for.

1It should skim, not cling.

Easy through the middle, with a shape that still looks chosen.

You sit down at the café and your top rides up, or clings where you'd rather it didn't, and for the next hour you keep tugging it back into place.

A top that's too loose isn't the answer either. I look for something in between: easy through the middle, with enough shape that it still looks chosen, so you can forget about it and get on with your day.

Fit varies between styles, so check the measurements for the one you like.

2There should be room to move.

Room to reach, lift and carry on.

A sleeve can look fine in the mirror, then pull the moment you reach for a cup or lift the shopping into the boot.

That's why I look at sleeves closely, and why the sleeve measurements are worth checking before you order. Fit differs between styles, so I can't promise every top will suit every arm.

3A little collar makes a surprising difference.

Same jeans. A little collar. A different feeling.

The same jeans look different depending on what sits above them. With a plain tee, it's a casual outfit. Add a collar, and the very same outfit looks a little more considered.

A soft collar frames your face and adds some structure, without the stiffness of a buttoned-up blouse. Add a colourful print, and your jeans become an outfit in the time it takes to put the top on.

4It has to feel as good as it looks.

Australia gets hot, and a top that traps the heat is miserable by lunchtime. A fabric that looks soft in the photo but arrives thin or clammy is one of the biggest disappointments of buying clothes online.

5Colour should make getting dressed easier, not harder.

It's Saturday morning and you're off to lunch. You take your favourite jeans from the drawer, and instead of working out what goes with what, you reach for a top you love.

Maybe a floral. Maybe a botanical print in soft greens, or stripes, or patchwork. The jeans stay the same, and somehow it's a different outfit each time. Now and then a friend will say, "I love that print."

6Buying a new favourite should feel reassuring.

I like colourful clothes that don't make a fuss, and I believe ordinary days deserve nice things to wear. I chose these tops with that kind of day in mind: easy, warm and a little cheerful.
